New Dispatching Center:  The new dispatching center in Marion, Ohio, to be officially opened and put into service on June 20, 2003, has now been completed.  Delivery and installation of computers and other equipment is to commence April 2.  Six dispatcher desks will be located in the center which are the Toledo, Akron, Mansfield, Dayton, Lima, and Hammond desks.  The Toledo desk will handle the Toledo Subdivision (Toledo-Columbus), the Akron desk will handle the Akron Subdivision (Ashland-Youngstown), the Mansfield desk will cover the Mansfield Subdivision (Ashland-Marion), the Dayton desk will handle the entire Dayton Subdivision (Marion-Dayton), the Lima desk will handle the Lima and ACY Subdivisions (Marion-Rochester and Ohio City-Carey, respectively), and the Hammond desk will cover the Hammond Subdivision (Rochester-Hammond).  The Marion center, named the W. O. Burchett Dispatching Center, will consolidate the Erie Division into one building as well as increase efficiency in the Marion terminal area.  While AC Cabin will remain open, its function will be to strictly handle traffic through Marion alone, including Penn Central and Norfolk Southern trains moving through the city.  The project will close one tower and ultimately cost approximately $9 million to complete.

C Cabin To Be Deactivated:  The long-standing tower at Carey, Ohio, will soon be deactivated and closed by July 1, 2003.  The current tower located at the former crossing of the Hocking Valley Railway (HVR) and Akron, Canton & Youngstown was built in 1949 to replace the original 1902 structure that caught fire just months before.  The tower, known as C Cabin, received upgraded dispatching equipment during the 1972 CTC installation on the Toledo Division.  The territory the tower covered after 1976 reached from Fostoria to Marion, as well as the entire ACY Division's West Subdivision (Delphos to Chatfield).  Following the sale of the ACY Division to the Wheeling & Lake Erie in 1990, the territory was altered to include all of the Erie Division's ACY Subdivision (Ohio City to Carey) as well as the previous coverage of the former Toledo Division, now the Hocking Division's Toledo Subdivision, from Fostoria to Marion.  At the same time in 1990, the tower received updated equipment and computers to increase dispatching efficiency.  Once the dispatching center in Marion is in operation, the task of deactivating C Cabin will begin.  When the tower is ultimately closed, four employees will have the opportunity to transfer to other parts of the system.  C Cabin will remain a key building for the HVR Signal & Communications Department, despite its closure as an active dispatching center.

Steam Excursion Schedule:  The Hocking Valley Railway Co.'s (HVR) Steam Department is in the final stages of producing a schedule for the 2003 operation season.  Be sure to watch our Website, www.chescweb.com/hvcorp, for a release of the schedule, which is expected to come out in mid-April.
