Hocking Valley Railway Co. Public Relations Department - For immediate release - June 19, 2003 Dispatching Center Update: The Hocking Valley Railway Company's (HVR) W. O. Burchett Dispatching Center will be officially dedicated tomorrow, June 20th, during a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. All dispatchers not on duty have been invited to attend the event, which will also see the attendance of several Ohio and Indiana dignitaries in addition to those of the Company. Those who are present for the dedication will have the opportunity to view the new center during the two-hour open house immediately following the end of the dedication ceremony. During the open house, there will be demonstrations of how the new computer systems work, the improved communications network, and explanations of the various information provided on three jumbo screens located on the main floor. At exactly 12:00 Noon, the dispatching center will be closed to the public and officially opened to dispatch trains across the entire Erie Division. The W. O. Burchett Dispatching Center, located in Marion, Ohio, is the most modern facility on the entire HVR system and valued at close to $9 million. Train Schedules Updated: In an effort to increase track capacity and efficiency, the Hocking Valley Railway Company (HVR) and the Genesee & Alleghany Southern (G&AS) have been consolidating trains and revising originating and terminating points on selected trains. In so doing, the revisions will better utilize motive power, existing track capacity, and improve transit times by decreasing yard dwell time. Currently, the schedule changes only occur to intermodal and autorack (multi-level) trains. Motive Power Usage Agreement: Furthering their commitment to increased efficiency and customer satisfaction, the Hocking Valley Railway Company (HVR) and Genesee & Alleghany Southern (G&AS) have signed agreements relating to motive power usage between the two railroads. For instance, most trains before the agreement would switch locomotive consists at interchange points, increasing transit times. Under the new agreement, unless necessary, no motive power changes will occur. All locomotives to be used on a run-through train will be serviced at the originating and terminating points, and, as needed, consists will be serviced enroute. All expenses such as fuel, supplies, and minor repairs will not be charged to the railroad owning the locomotive, if HVR or G&AS. The agreement in this form is expected to decrease transit times, while further increasing cooperation between the two railroads. Hammond Terminal Upgraded: The computer system and physical plant of the Hocking Valley Railway Company's (HVR) Hammond (Ind.) Terminal are to be upgraded by the end of July 2003. All intermodal yard tracks will receive much needed maintenance, as will support tracks within the freight classification yard. The computer system will receive new software and selected hardware component upgrades. The upgrades to the terminal will be beneficial to the HVR and customers alike in reducing delays in information transmitted via computer, and, the case of the physical plant upgrades, will reduce maintenance costs of rolling stock.
